Home Truths: The Peel Years & Beyond
Home Truths: The Peel Years & Beyond

BBC Radio 4’s Home Truths, which was hosted by John Peel from 1998 until his death in 2004, had a hugely dedicated following. The programme became synonymous with Peel and with his family, as well as his unique and eccentric views on British life, which were reflected in the people he chose to contribute to the programme. From an autistic child who’s a brilliant magician, to the Page 3 girl who became a mayor; and from a man betrayed by his best friend to a fire-eater in a giant, pink rabbit’s suit, Home Truths was at its strongest when it juxtaposed the inspiring with the humorous, the moving with the idiosyncratic. Never sentimental, it was often incredibly moving and, in the voice of John Peel in particular, managed to be enquiring without being voyeuristic, concerned but never ingratiating. This collection of the best stories from the programme reflects the particular character of the show and its contributors, ranging between comedy and tragedy, eccentricity and inspiration. A perfect bedside companion, and a book for dipping into, Home Truths: The Peel Years and Beyond wonderfully evokes the true flavour and voices of British life.

Terry Wogan: Musn't Grumble
Terry Wogan: Musn't Grumble

Written in a style familiar to his millions of listeners, rich with warmth and irony, Musn't Grumble is Terry's definitive autobiography. Not only does he introduce the reader to post-Emergency Ireland, his chain-smoking maiden aunts, his quick-witted mother and hard-working father and the (not so) Christian Fathers who tried to knock his hands off, he explains how he's managed to avoid a hard day's work from childhood to knighthood, and entertained a few million people along the way. Terry talks in full about his past 35 years with the BBC: his hugely popular Radio 2 show, his TV shows Wogan (Now & Then) and Blankety Blank, the Eurovision Song Contest, working on the BBC's Children in Need programmes, and where he learnt to breakdance so brilliantly. It is the autobiography his fans - and TOGs - have been waiting for: fresh, honest, a real craic and completely the same ... but different.

Who Do You Think You Are?: Trace Your Family History Back to the Tudors
Who Do You Think You Are?: Trace Your Family History Back to the Tudors

To accompany the third series of the award-winning BBC television series, this book gives the amateur genealogist all the tools to trace their ancestors back over six centuries, taking them on a fascinating historical journey into the past. For the first time in a popular genealogy book, author Anton Gill and "Who Do You Think You Are?" family history expert Nick Barratt have created a wonderfully readable book which takes the reader back through time past the usual family tree landmark of 1837, when birth, marriage and death registration were made mandatory, to allow the reader to trace their ancestors back to Tudor times. This book will explore the history which led to the dispersion of the population, it will look at local genealogy and connect the history of Britain with the people who lived during the times and the records they left. Whether your 17th-century ancestor was a merchant seamen listed on the muster rolls, or of a trade registered through the Livery guilds of Newcastle, Yorkshire or London; a midwife licensed by the church from medieval times (in case they had to baptise a sick baby at birth); an alehouse owner (victualler) who was licensed from the 1500s onwards; or an afro-Caribbean immigrant from the 1700s, this book fills the gaps in your family tree and gives you the resources to search out your medieval ancestors. This book is a guide to tracing your family tree back for six centuries, into the time of Tudor kings and peasant uprisings, through a fascinating array of historical resources. It is also a fascinating social history of the peoples of the United Kingdom and how they were shaped by the events of their times.

Fred
Fred

"Fred Dibnah's World" celebrates the life and work of Britain's best known steeplejack and national treasure, Fred Dibnhah. Before his death in 2004, Fred presented many popular series, including Magnificent Monuments, The Age of Steam and Made in Britain, all of which attracted viewers in their millions. "Fred" is the companion to the 12-part "BBC2" series celebrating the life of this great man, which combines highlights from some of Dibnah's classic programmes with previously unseen footage. The book can of course go much further than the series, including an extraordinarily account of Fred's childhood which evokes a lost England and our great industrial heritage. Fred's passion for the glories of the Victorian age and his fascination with the landscape he grew up in, plus his admiration for the craftsmen and labourers who made it all possible, captivate us on every page. Fred is the personification of everything that made England great in the first place. And, this is a glorious tribute to a man whom millions came to love.

Top of the Pops: Top 40 TV Gold
Top of the Pops: Top 40 TV Gold

Top of the Pops began life as a rebellious teenager, but unfortunately ended up as Grandpa at the disco. After decades as must-see Thursday-night TV, it was overtaken by the realities of a new multi-channel, digital age, was shunted disrespectfully between time-slots and even relegated to BBC2, an irrelevant shadow of its glory days gone by. But there is an entire generation that will never forget the pivotal role TOTP held in the nation's thoughts and affections. It brought into our living rooms both unforgettable moments of visceral pop brilliance, and also some of the clumsiest and most amateur performances possible (by artists and presenters alike) that live on in the memory for different reasons entirely. A very British institution, TOTP was there through the best and worst of pop times. Packed with glorious images from rediscovered archives, this book will be an affectionate celebration of the artfulness and absurdities of TOTP, not via a dry chronological history, but by focusing in on 40 highlights - some sublime, some bizarre, many plain daft - that made the show such a unique spectacle. From the pipe-smoking DLT and his ever wacky fellow DJs to the narrative dance routines of Pan's People, from David Bowie to Clive Dunn, from the rebels who refused to mime for the cameras to the audience members who dressed up for them, TOTP really mattered to children of the seventies, and this book will be irresistible to them.

David Attenborough: State Of The Planet (DVD)

To coincide with the new millennium, David Attenborough brings his matter-of-fact clarity to the subject, investigating the latest scientific research to explain the situation in simple terms for the first time. Over the course of three programmes, David works with experts to ask whether nature really is in a crisis of species extinction, to examine why has this come about and finally to understand what options for the future remain open to us. His quest takes him on a truly global trail, from Kenya to Ecuador, from the Philippines and the Maldives to Easter Island, and from South Africa to California - visiting habitats of threatened species and exploring ways in which life can be sustained for the future.

Barbarians Vs All Blacks: 1973 (DVD)
Barbarians Vs All Blacks: 1973 (DVD)

This DVD brings you the full match between the Barbarians and the All Blacks, regarded by many as the finest match ever televised. This was the final match of the All Blacks' tour, which had seen them record victories over Wales, Scotland and England; only a drawn game against Ireland had prevented them from achieving a Grand Slam. The Barbarians' side included some of the truly great players of the era, men such as Duckham, Gibson, JPR Williams, Bennett, Edwards, McBride and Carmichael. The team displayed an admirable commitment to that brand of open, attacking rugby which has come to be associated with Barbarian sides over the years - the tone of the whole match being set by Gareth Edwards' try in the third minute, which must rank as one of the best ever. This, together with some equally exciting play from an All Blacks team with outstanding players such as Going, Batty and Williams, made for a spectacular game in which one thrill followed another.

Match of the Day: 60s, 70s, 80s (DVD)
Match of the Day: 60s, 70s, 80s (DVD)

On August 22nd 1964 the BBC launched a new weekly football series called Match of the Day: Liverpool played Arsenal, Kenneth Wolstenholme was the commentator, and television viewers entered a brave new football world. No one could predict that the fledgling programme, watched by 20,000 people would ultimately attract millions of viewers and would run for over a quarter of a century. The '60s charts the development of the series when the game was blessed with true characters and outstanding players who became masters in gripping televised football. It was the era of Best, Law and Charlton, of Bell, Lee and Summerbee, of the mercurial Jimmy Greaves, of Shankly's Liverpool, Catterick's Everton and Sir Alf Ramsey's England. As Match of the Day moved into the '70s it reflected the continued high profile of the nation's favourite sport. Over 32 million people watched Chelsea beat Leeds in the 1970 FA Cup Final replay and Match of the Day was now an essential part of the weekend's TV viewing. The flair men still existed - Keegan, Hudson, Currie, Bowles, Osgood, Worthington and, of course, Best - filing the nation's screens with skill and daring and replacing the innocence of the previous decade with a new brand of professionalism.

Travel

Bill Bryson: Journeys In English
Bill Bryson: Journeys In English

This BBC Radio 4 series is written and presented by Bill Bryson and based on his best-selling book 'Mother Tongue'. In it he romps through the history of Britain to reveal how English became such an infuriatingly complex - but ultimately world-beating - language. The subject areas covered in the course of the six episodes (originally broadcast as 'Mother Tongue') include the arrival of the Angles and the Saxons, the rules which brought order to a disorderly language, the million and one ways to have fun with the English language, the struggle with phrasal verbs (and the way things often get lost in the translation) and the future of English - does Estuary English Rule OK?

Michael Palin's New Europe (DVD)
Michael Palin's New Europe (DVD)

Until the early 1990s, when the Berlin Wall came tumbling down, travelling behind the iron curtain was never easy. In undertaking his new journey through Eastern Europe, breathing in its rich history, filming its exquisite sights and talking to its diverse peoples, Michael fills what has been a void in his own experience and that of very many of his own generation. As in all his series, Palin's New Europe takes the form of a journey through countries which have rich and complex cultures. Few have survived intact, as the ebb and flow of warring armies has continually changed the map of Europe. Starting in the mountains of Slovenia he travels down through Croatia and the former Yugoslavia to Albania before turning northwards to embrace Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, The Ukraine, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, the former East Germany, Poland, the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad (as Konigsberg originally home to the Teutonic Knights), Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, opening up a new and undiscovered world to millions of viewers and readers.
